The Confidence

02.02.17

The Confidence is the second pillar that holds player's performance. It’s probably the one which determines if a player can truly perform or not. Like The Motivation, it’s extremely fragile and is influenced by many off the court factors like the coach, routines or relationship with teammates. A confidence player is the first brick to have a team that plays trusting on what they do.

THE SNAKE BITING ITS TAIL

Player's

Self-Confidence

Others' Confidence

in the Player

IT'S A PARADOX

·If the player doesn’t have self-confidence then the others won’t believe in him

·If the others don’t have confidence in the player then he won’t believe in himself

Coach’s role is always above the rest, so is he who has more influence in everything related to

psychology and relationships with players.

That’s why I think the responsibility and

the first stone always lies on

coach’s shoulders.

GIVING CONFIDENCE

COACH is who can give or take away more confidence from the PLAYERS, and consequently, the TEAM.

FEEDBACK

Positive or negative, it’s mandatory to know how and when use it

TALKING

Have an honest and open window for dialogue

NON-VERBAL LANGUAGE

Players notice coach’s rections, always. Be careful with your body language, it’s essential

ROLE IN THE TEAM

I recommend giving players flexible roles within the team. If the player is working hard and improving, you have to keep your word

PLAYING MINUTES

Here is where bad coaches usually fail, either by excess or deficit

CONFIDENCE

REQUIRES

TRUST

Most important thing to build a confidence relationship is to be honest with each other. Trust is a two-way road, coach and the players.

COACH

·Don’t lie

·Don’t promise unattainable things

·Have integrity

·Treat everyone equally

PLAYER

·Don’t cheat

·Give 100% whenever required

·Be honest

·Treat staff and teammates with respect

Building CONFIDENCE

We can talk about player's confidence as a LONG-TERM PROCESS, which requires calm and dedication

1st PLANNING

An elaborate, flexible and coherent plan

2nd TEAMWORK

Good coaches and excellent teammates

3rd DAILY WORK

Technical, physical and mental

4th A LOT OF PATIENCE

Good things take time and come with extra reward

Players Without Confidence

Like The Motivation, we’ll have situations in which our players are lacked of confidence. As coaches, we must have the knowledge and responsibility to repair those players.

What They Need?

·Fluid communication channel

·Easy and affordable tasks

·Participation and controlled importance

In The

ZONE

Coming into THE ZONE is a concept that Americans use a lot. It refers to the moment when a player goes through such a concentration and confidence level that he feels unable to miss a shot. We’ll analyze it further in The Concentration.

A player IN THE ZONE

MULTIPLY CONFIDENCE of teammates and the whole team in a very short time

BOOST TEAMMATES performance in a considerable way

DOMINATE A GAME whether it be making baskets or leading, defending, passing...
