Shooting Aim

08.02.17

Great shooters, the real ones, are those capable of putting the ball in the exact place they want to. It may sound obvious, because logic says there is just one place to put the ball in: the hoop. But the truth is that when good players are shooting around, their target isn’t just put it through the basket but make it swish. Always.

AIM

THE

GENETIC OR LEARNED?

It’s a key factor to recruit players, especially when they are young and the physical/technical condition is very limited. Finding a children able to score basket over the average is a common situation, even without practice at all.

At pro level, players

QUESTION

So, are Great Shooters BORN or MADE?

ANSWER

BOTH. They have to be born with good aim and then practice well the technique to use the natural gift in a real game situation. If so, then we’ll have an extraordinary shooter.

FINGERS' SENSITIVITY

It’s the most important part of the body for a shooter. Fingers will decide if the ball goes in or out because they have the sensitive and accuracy to change the shot.

·SPIN

Control the speed of rotation of the ball

·TRAJECTORY

Make sure the ball doesn’t go to right or left

·STRENGTH

Can slightly alter it in case it will be short or long

CONTROL?

Neuromuscular Junction

Connects the BRAIN with the MUSCLES

Good ball handlers and great shooters have this connetion HIGHLY DEVELOPED

EXTRA

!!

Still you'll make it SWISH

There are many different ways to get the ball through the rim. If we compare the relation between the diameter of the basket and the ball, we can see that there is a big margin of error and still hit it, which allows great players to score practically always.

DRILLS

CATCH & SHOOT

SHOOTING OFF THE DRIBBLE

Try to practice whatever kind shooting drill (eg. Shooter + Passer + Rebounder) which goal is to make SWISH instead of just make a simple basket. I like to do my players compete with this rules:

·Swish BASKET   = +1

·Simple BASKET  =  0

·Missed BASKET  = -1

When you start to doing this, your players can struggle and get into FRUSTRATION. With the time and after make some good repetitions, they'll start COMPETING against themselves in a SAVAGE way.

SHOOTING IN REAL SITUATIONS

·1x1 after close out

Defensive player passes the ball and close out

Offensive player just can CATCH & SHOOT or SHOOT OF THE DRIBBLE

·1x1 real

Defensive player offers the ball and starts

Offensive player just can CATCH & SHOOT or SHOOT OF THE DRIBBLE

*If you make SWISH then you still in offense, always. If you miss or it's just a simple basket then you go to defensive line

SHOOTING TARGET

We set the spot where the players must place the ball and then score.

1 SWISH, nothing but the net.

2 Hit the small square corner and basket.

3 Hit the small square in the middle and basket.

4 Touch the top of the glass and basket.

5 Near to the glass corner and basket (recommend to change shooting angle).

6 Touch the bottom of the glass and basket.

7 Make the ball bounce on top of the backboard and basket.

8 Shooting behind the backboard, the goes all over it and basket.
